Engine Air Filter vs. Cabin Air Filter - What's The Difference?

We check the filters on your car as part of the courtesy check when servicing your vehicle because good maintenance saves you money now and down the road.

There are two types of air filters in most cars --

The engine air filter has been around forever, keeping a steady flow of clean air going into your engine, where it’s metered and mixed with fuel to provide combustion and power.

Most engine air filters cost $20-30 and are located in the engine compartment, where they’re usually easy to check and change.

The cabin air filter, also known as a pollen filter keeps a steady flow of air flowing into the heating and air-conditioning system.

Because cabin air filters filter much finer particles than engine air filters, they can get dirty, smelly, and clogged easier. So if you’ve noticed a new foul smell in your car, or reduced heating and air-conditioning performance, you probably need a cabin air filter.

(P.S. I use Meguiar's Whole Air Re-Fresher Odor Eliminator Mist to eliminate doggie and coffee spill odors.)

Most cabin air filters cost $30-40 including installation.

We recommend changing both your engine and cabin air filter yearly or every 15,000 miles, but it really depends on how much you drive and where. In dusty or heavy traffic conditions with poor air quality, you could be replacing the filters more often.

Don't worry, we check your air filter and cabin air filter every time your vehicle is in for service so it won't get like this one I found last week!
